I have always been a huge fan of pizza. A big slice of bread topped with cheese and tomatoes sprinkled with toppings on top. Its like a party in my mouth that gets me excited every single time.
However what Bombay lacks is a set of good pizza joints where you can just go and grab one to go or eat there. A situation I'm sure the guys behind Crave are trying to solve. Already open at two locations - Prabhadevi and Bandra - their aim is to be a high quality alternative to Dominos. This makes me very glad as there are just not enough Pizzerias in the city.
The location at Prabhadevi which we visited is quite small with just 4-5 tables and is done up in a cheery yellow colour. It immediately made me think of cheese and I guess thats a good think when it comes to a pizza brand. Over time though the color yellow may be too bright for some.
Crave manages to keep the menu simple with a selection of Pizzas, Burgers and Sandwiches too choose from with roughly the same number of options for both their vegetarian and non-vegetarian patrons.
One aspect which some patrons may not be aware of - of which many will be Jain I'm sure - is that the pizza sauce is made only of imported san marzano tomatoes and doesn't contain any onion or garlic. For me that means I can grab a pizza from Crave to eat with some of my Jain friends without having to worry that I'm compromising on flavor.
Our meal consisted of a Secret Garden pizza which came with its thin but firm crust with sun-dried tomato, mushroom, corn and garlic as the toppings. Personally the sauce didn't stand out for me as much as I would have hoped however a quick tweet conversation with the owners the next day clarified that I could just ask for a bit more sauce next time.
Along with the pie we ordered for the fungi town burger which consisted of a mushroom-ricotta patty with caramelised onion, tomato, truffle mayo and cheddar cheese topping the patty. I love mushrooms in my burgers and this one is a total delight. I wouldn't want to miss out on this burger the next time I visit.
The Vanilla Panacotta which we had to round out our meal though was quite ho-hum and didn't really do much for us, easily avoidable.
Serving good quality pizzas at a reasonable rate, Crave definitely left me craving another visit and with a reasonable expenditure of Rs.600 ish per head I'm sure my wallet wouldn't mind. ;)
